Summer Skin Starts Before Your Vacation

Summer is made for lake days, patios, beach vacations, and weekends outdoors. While you're planning what to pack, don't forget to prepare your skin too.

A healthy summer glow isn't about getting more sun, it's about protecting your skin so it stays healthy, youthful, and radiant all season long. With the right skincare and sun protection, you can prevent premature aging, pigmentation, dehydration, and long-term UV damage while still enjoying every minute outside.

Why SPF Is Your Most Important Skincare Product

Sun Protection Factor (SPF) measures how well a sunscreen protects your skin from UVB rays, the rays responsible for sunburn. But sunburn is only part of the story.

UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and are one of the biggest contributors to:

  • Premature aging

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Loss of collagen and elastin

  • Pigmentation and sun spots

  • Uneven skin tone

  • Increased risk of skin cancer

Even on cloudy days or while driving, UV exposure is occurring. That's why sunscreen isn't just for vacation... it's an everyday skincare essential.

Start with Healthy, Hydrated Skin

Your skin barrier is your first line of defense against environmental damage. When your skin is dehydrated, it becomes more prone to irritation, inflammation, and uneven healing after sun exposure.

Before your vacation:

  • Increase your water intake.

  • Keep your skincare routine simple and consistent.

  • Avoid over-exfoliating right before a trip.

  • Moisturize morning and night to support your skin barrier.

One of my favourite products for summer hydration is Regimen Lab C.R.E.A.M. It replenishes ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids that naturally exist in healthy skin, helping strengthen the skin barrier while locking in hydration without feeling heavy.

For an added boost, Regimen Lab Wave Serum provides multiple molecular weights of hyaluronic acid along with barrier-supporting ingredients that deeply hydrate the skin and help it retain moisture throughout long days in the sun, heat, and air conditioning.

Healthy, hydrated skin not only looks better, it also functions better.

Don't Skip Your Antioxidants

Think of sunscreen as your shield and antioxidants as your backup defense.

Adding a Vitamin C serum into your morning routine helps neutralize free radicals created by UV exposure while supporting collagen production and brightening the complexion.

My go-to recommendation is Circadia Vitamin C Reversal Serum, which pairs beautifully underneath sunscreen and provides an extra layer of protection against environmental damage.

If you're looking for an SPF that feels like skincare instead of sunscreen, I always recommend Colorescience.

My favourite options include:

  • Broad-spectrum SPF 50 protection

  • Mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide

  • Adapts to your natural skin tone

  • Protects against UVA, UVB, blue light, pollution, and infrared damage

Colorescience Total Protection Face Shield Glow SPF 50

  • Gives the skin a healthy, luminous glow

  • Mineral SPF 50

Colorescience Brush-On Shield SPF 50This is the sunscreen I never leave home without.

It's perfect for:

  • Reapplying throughout the day

  • Over makeup

  • At the beach

  • On the golf course

  • Hiking

  • Kids' sporting events

Because remember, applying sunscreen once in the morning isn't enough.

How to Apply Sunscreen Properly

Even the best sunscreen won't work if it isn't applied correctly.

For the best protection:

  • Apply SPF 15–30 minutes before going outdoors.

  • Use approximately two finger lengths of sunscreen for your face and neck.

  • Don't forget your ears, eyelids, lips, neck, chest, and the backs of your hands.

  • Reapply every two hours.

  • Reapply immediately after swimming, excessive sweating, or towel drying.

If you're wearing makeup, a brush-on mineral SPF makes reapplication quick and easy.

Protect More Than Just Your Face

One of the biggest mistakes I see is people protecting their face but forgetting everything else.

Your neck, chest, and hands often show signs of aging before your face because they receive significant UV exposure.

Make sure you're applying sunscreen to:

  • Neck

  • Décolleté

  • Shoulders

  • Arms

  • Hands

  • Legs

  • Feet

Future you will thank you.

Extra Ways to Protect Your Skin

SPF works best when combined with other healthy habits:

  • Wear wide-brim hats whenever possible.

  • Choose UV-protective sunglasses.

  • Wear lightweight UPF clothing during prolonged outdoor activities.

  • Seek shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when UV rays are strongest.

  • Stay hydrated throughout the day.

  • Moisturize after sun exposure to support your skin barrier.

Planning Treatments Before Vacation?

If you're considering treatments like Pixel laser, microneedling, chemical peels, or other resurfacing procedures, it's best to schedule them well before your vacation.

Freshly treated skin is more sensitive to UV exposure, and protecting your results is just as important as the treatment itself.

If you're unsure about timing, I'd be happy to help create a treatment plan that fits your vacation schedule.

Your Summer Skin Checklist

Before you head out the door:

  • Hydrate your skin morning and night.

  • Apply your Vitamin C serum.

  • Moisturize with barrier-supporting skincare.

  • Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 50.

  • Pack a sunscreen for reapplication.

  • Wear sunglasses and a hat.

  • Drink plenty of water.

  • Enjoy the sunshine, safely.

Beautiful skin isn't about avoiding the sun, it's about protecting the skin you're in.
